Golden-brown cornbread cubes with a crumbly interior, lightly dusted and piled on a dark surface, with parsley garnish in the corner.

This is truly THE BEST tofu we’ve ever prepared. It’s so crispy and void of any of that weird texture that often accompanies tofu. If you think tofu is gross, I challenge you to try this recipe!

INGREDIENTS:

For the tofu:

  • 1 package firm or extra firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Remove the tofu from the package and drain off the liquid. Wrap the tofu in a clean dish towel or paper towels and place it on a plate. Set another plate on top and add weighted items on top (I use a few cookbooks). Let it press for at least 30 minutes to remove excess moisture. Don’t skip this step!
  2. Once pressed, cut the tofu into small bite sized cubes. Place the cubes in a bowl and sprinkle the cornstarch over them. Gently toss until all sides are lightly coated.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes in a single layer. Sprinkle it with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook, turning occasionally, until all sides are golden brown and crispy.
  4. Remove the tofu from the pan and place it on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil. Serve warm with rice, vegetables, and your favourite sauce.

Here’s an optional sauce you can try if you’d like! Put all ingredients in a small sauce pan on medium heat and stir until combined.

Optional Sauce (Kung Pow)

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ginger (minced)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water or broth
